Any hope that English or Labour politicians (North or South they are all still Sassenachs) will be interested in anything but a utilitarian approach favouring their own interests has surely been eradicated by now.

It would help if you recognised that (like Scotland) England is two distinct countries - City England and non-City England. City England is made up of peoples from the former British Empire (an enterprise strongly supported by Scots at the time) and has zero desire to imprison anumybody. The shires not so much. I had my dna tested recently and it came back 47% West African, 25% Irish, 21% English, 5% Scandinavian and 2% Jewish. Whilst an extreme case, I'm not untypical of city England

Interesting. I’m saying that England has its own great traditions in both the cities and the towns.

“King of the North” smacks of BBC weather people who refer to the “far north” while casually flapping their hand somewhere close to Dumfries and Galloway.
