I've had my DNA examined. Many of my ancient ancestors were Viking. Some were Scythian. My maternal DNA (never changes and is passed mother to daughter) was tracked back to a woman who walked out of Africa over 10,000 years ago they say (guessing she wasn't a wee pasty white burd like me!) My maternal grandmother was a Brodie who married an Alexander. Fascinating stuff!

An interesting piece. 'Scots travelled widely in modern times...' In recent years, given our past, I've found it strange that there are some in Scotland who treat Scots who have moved outside the country as almost having given up their right to be 'Scottish.' I'm currently reading The Marches by Rory Stewart, which is about walking the border between Scotland and England. Part of it is also about the diversity of people from other countries who lived and worked in the area during Roman times. One anecdote involves Rory Stewart telling a car full of academics in the US about the contrasting cultural differences between the Sottish and English sides of the border. He's told by one of the academics that his observations are untrue, despite the fact they didn't know the area and he actually lived on the English side of the border while his father was Scottish.
