Someone told me today that he thinks that the smart meter network in Scotland is proprietary because they thought at the time that would provide better coverage in rural areas. He thought that English smart meters used any public WiFi connection. If it’s true then the decision authorities got it wrong. More of rural Scotland has conventional public internet now than smart meter coverage

Yes I need to research this. It seems between a third and 40% of Scottish households can’t get a smart meter. It’s possible they just thought 2 percent of the UK population was a tolerable level of exclusion - but that’s mostly in Scotland it seems.

If only the mainstream media would honestly report this .... instead of years of gaslighting bullshit. This mismanagement and exploitation by successive Westminster Govts should be front and centre of EVERY SNP campaign and interview 😡

This is completely unjust. We are being taken for idiots. Time we got out of this toxic Union.

Meantime I'd be in favour of a bit of sabotage!

Jackie, do you mean an independent Scotland would pay to upgrade the grid out of taxation?

Jackie Kemp's avatar

The UK insists that the only energy worth investing in is that which can be moved to the south of England. That’s not thr only solution for an independent Scotland

Neil King's avatar

So what solutions for an independent Scotland are you advocating then?

I wouid like to see the grid brought back into public ownership and invested in. Selling electricity to rUK would help pay for that. Making hydrogen, maybe a hydrogen pipeline to Germany, . Pumped storage hydro - Scotland used to be a world leader in this but for ten years the UK has refused to set a market framework. Zonal pricing. A smart meter system that works for Scotland.

Interesting. And would you foresee Government taking over the role of subsidising renewables instead of consumers as at present?
