Thanks for writing about your trip. I am inspired to read more from Nan now. So disappointed that Doric was not used....I guess Doric, like Shetlandic, is an extremely difficult dialect of Scots to master for actors. However, this culture washing should be discouraged otherwise Doric and other dialects will die out. I have lived in Aberdeenshire for decades and understand and can speak Doric very well but my central Scotland accent betrays me to native speakers! Please can folk in the Scottish theatre business think harder about linguistic authenticity, especially around language and dialect as we are going to lose so much that is at the heart of our culture. For tourists there are subtitles.
